Glossary

Plain-language definitions for the metrics, placement types and workflow labels you will see in briefs, approval queues and monthly reports. Jump to a letter or open a term for operator context.

A

  • Anchor Text

The visible, clickable words in a hyperlink. Search engines treat anchor text as a strong contextual signal about the topic of the linked destination page.

B

  • Backlink

An inbound hyperlink from an external site to your pages. Backlinks support discovery, authority transfer, and competitive visibility in organic search.

C

  • Crawl Budget

How much attention crawlers spend fetching pages on a site. Large sites manage crawl budget; outreach on crawl-friendly publishers helps linked URLs get found.

D

  • Digital PR

Pitching data, expert quotes, and assets to journalists for coverage and links. Digital PR merges media outreach with measurable SEO and brand campaign goals.

  • Disavow

Search Console accepts a file asking Google to ignore specific backlinks. Disavow is a last resort after manual removal outreach for harmful links fails.

  • Dofollow

Standard hyperlinks without restrictive rel attributes. Search engines may use dofollow links to pass ranking signals and discover connected destination URLs.

  • Domain Authority

Moz's comparative score predicting how well a domain might rank from link data. It helps shortlist publishers but never replaces hands-on quality review.

  • Domain Rating

A third-party score estimating relative backlink profile strength on a logarithmic scale. Teams use DR as a quick filter, not proof of traffic or editorial fit.

E

  • E-E-A-T

E-E-A-T covers experience, expertise, authority, and trust. Earned editorial links from credible publishers reinforce quality signals on sensitive topics.

  • Editorial Link

A link added voluntarily through editorial judgment, not payment. Editorial links signal genuine citation and outlast manipulative placements in profiles.

G

  • Guest Post

An article by an external contributor on a host site, usually with a contextual link to the writer's site or client URL in the body or author bio section.

I

  • Indexation

Whether search engines crawled and stored a URL in their index. A live outreach placement may deliver limited SEO value until the linking page is indexed.

L

  • Link Equity

The ranking influence a page may pass to another URL through hyperlinks. Equity flow varies by link quality, placement depth, attributes, and source authority.

  • Link Farm

Pages or sites existing mainly to host outbound links with little user value. Link farms pollute profiles and should be excluded from outreach prospect lists.

  • Link Reclamation

Fixing unlinked mentions or broken URLs by asking publishers to add or restore links. Reclamation recovers equity you earned without pitching new assets.

  • Link Velocity

The rate at which new backlinks or referring domains appear over time. Sudden unnatural spikes can look suspicious; steady growth fits organic patterns better.

N

  • Niche Edit

Adding a contextual link into an existing published page on a relevant site. Niche edits leverage aged URLs that may already rank and carry crawl history.

  • Nofollow

A rel value telling search engines not to treat a link as editorial endorsement. Nofollow links still drive referral traffic from major publishers.

O

  • Outreach

Contacting publishers and journalists to pitch content, data, or collaborations that earn links. Effective outreach stays targeted, researched, and persistent.

P

  • PBN

Private blog networks are controlled site groups built to sell manipulative links. Reputable outreach programs exclude PBN inventory from every client campaign.

  • Placement

A live published link or mention on an external site from outreach. Placements record source URL, target URL, anchor text, rel attributes, and publication date.

R

  • Referral Traffic

Visitors who reach your site by clicking links on other domains. Referral traffic proves outreach value beyond rankings and shows engaged publisher audiences.

  • Referring Domain

A unique external website that links to your property at least once. Referring domain counts stress source diversity over raw backlink totals alone.

S

  • SERP

The search engine results page for a query. SERP layout guides outreach because links influence organic listings, snippets, and brand surface area in search.

  • Sponsored

The rel=sponsored attribute marks paid or compensated links. Proper use clarifies commercial ties and aligns with search link scheme guidance.

T

  • Topical Relevance

How closely a linking page's subject aligns with your target URL theme. Strong relevance helps search engines read endorsements as meaningful, not noise.

  • Toxic Backlink

An inbound link from spammy, hacked, or manipulative sources that may hurt trust. Toxic backlinks need review, removal outreach, or disavow when confirmed.

  • Turnaround

Time from approved outreach to a live published placement. Turnaround shifts with publisher type, editorial backlog, holidays, and content revision rounds.

U

  • UGC

User-generated content links carry rel=ugc to show they come from visitors, not site owners. The tag helps search systems treat forum links differently.

W

  • White Label

Delivery of outreach under another agency brand. White-label operators fulfill placements while partners manage client relationships and external reporting.
